Vizcaya was built by American industrialist James Deering, who wintered on the property from 1916 to 1925. The extraordinary estate was created to look like an Italian villa that had stood for 400 years and had been occupied and renovated by several generations. Today the house is filled with extraordinary art and furnishings that evoke the glamour of America’s Gilded Age.
Ten acres of serene gardens overlooking Biscayne Bay were designed as one vast outdoor room. The grounds feature many fountains, a central pool surrounding an elevated island, the elevated Mound with its small house or “Casino,” statuary, and several themed gardens. Don’t miss the large orchid specimens in the David A. Klein Orchidarium, and the historic eleven-building Vizcaya Village that is being restored for the public.
